meet ron highland

My home for 33 years has been in and around the 51st District, having lived in Manhattan, St George, Topeka, Wamego, and rural Wabaunsee County. I was born and raised in Brewster, Kansas, and am a fourth generation Kansan. Linda (Mayer) from Marysville and I have been married 49 years. We are blessed to have a daughter, son, daughter-in-law, two grandsons and a granddaughter. My degrees are BS, DVM, and PhD, all from Kansas State University. Upon retirement from Bayer, we moved from Overland Park back to the Wamego area and enjoy rural life in Wabaunsee County living along the Kansas River.

In my military service, I first attended Army Officer Candidate School and served in the Infantry as a Platoon Leader in Korea. While stationed there, I was wounded during the Pueblo Naval Ship crisis. In a second enlistment as a Captain in the Army Veterinary Corps, I served as the Post Veterinarian, stationed at Fort Sill, Oklahoma. During my service time, I was also stationed at Ft Benning, Ft Leonard Wood, Ft Ord, and Ft Riley. My lifelong career in agriculture first began as a young man working on the farm. After graduation from Kansas State University in Veterinary Medicine, I went into private practice, principally with large animals, and then returned to KSU Veterinary College to teach while earning my PhD in Veterinary Pharmacology/Physiology

In my career in Research and Development at Bayer Animal Health I designed and led research studies for new animal drugs. During that time I brought Baytril®, a drug well known for the treatment of cattle, onto the market, as well as, led other international studies. My service organizations and memberships have included Sertoma, Rotary, VFW, Legion, Disabled American Veterans, Lutherans for Life, and Kansans for Life. I am a member at Mt Calvary Lutheran Church, LCMS, where I have served as an elder and Bible study leader. I am a Republican Precinct Committeeman, Delegate to the Kansas Republican Party, and served as Chairman of the Wabaunsee County Republican Party for six years. During my six years in the House of Representatives, I have served as Chairman of the Education Committee, the Joint Administrative Rules and Regulations Committee, and the 2015 Joint K-12 Student Success Interim Study Committee. As Vice Chairman, I served on the Federal and State Affairs Committee, the Joint Administrative Rules and Regulations Committee, and the 2015 All Day Kindergarten Committee. I have also served as a member on the Agriculture, Appropriations, Education Budget, Energy and Environment, Tax, and Transportation Committees. I feel called back into the service of my country out of concern for our Representative Republic and the sovereignty of Kansas. The oath I swore three times committed me to uphold the United States and Kansas Constitutions. This is an oath that I take very seriously, and the responsibility of representing District 51 in the Kansas House of Representatives is a year-round commitment. I respect and appreciate the people of my District and I consider it an honor and privilege to serve..
